Open Data Notice

Binnie uses data from Open Food Facts (openfoodfacts.org), a free, collaborative database of food products from around the world. Open Food Facts is made available under the Open Database License (ODbL) v1.0, and its individual contents under the Database Contents License (DbCL) v1.0.

1. What we use

When you scan a barcode or look up a packaged product, the product details we show, such as its name, brand, quantity, ingredient list, allergen and trace information, nutrition facts and Nutri-Score grade, come from a product database we build from the public Open Food Facts data export. We rebuild it regularly from the latest export. Product information that comes from Open Food Facts is credited to Open Food Facts in the app.

2. Our derived database

The product database behind our food lookup service (kiwi-food-api) is a Derivative Database of Open Food Facts within the meaning of the ODbL. We make it available under the Open Database License (ODbL) v1.0. It is kept separate from the government nutrition databases listed in our Terms of Service and from information that users contribute, which are not part of it.

3. How to obtain it

Under section 4.6 of the ODbL we offer the method we use to make our derived database. It is built by a set of ingest scripts that download the public Open Food Facts data export and reformat it for fast lookup. Our code repository is not public, so the ingest scripts and instructions for running them are available on request, at no charge: email privacy@kiwirecipes.app with the subject "Open data request".

4. Using Open Food Facts data yourself

You can download the original Open Food Facts data, and read its full license terms, at openfoodfacts.org. The text of the Open Database License is published at opendatacommons.org/licenses/odbl/1-0/.
